What is obstetrics?

Most doctors and midwives who focus on women's care are trained in both obstetric and gynecologic care. Obstetric care focuses primarily on childbirth and pregnancy-related health concerns. At LewisGale Physicians, our goal is to provide comprehensive, compassionate obstetric care to ensure expectant mothers feel prepared for their special day. To achieve this, our expert healthcare providers work closely with each patient to create an individualized plan for their pregnancy. This plan includes support and services for prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care.

Maternity care

Pregnancy and birth are wondrous life experiences, and we consider it our privilege to care for you during this exciting time. However, we understand you may feel more than just excitement — perhaps nervousness too. That's why we are here to support you throughout your journey to motherhood.

Prenatal care

Our OB/GYNs and midwives provide prenatal care to help you and your baby stay healthy during pregnancy. To do this, your OB/GYN or midwife will have regular appointments with you during pregnancy, in which they will monitor you and the baby and help you create your birth plan.

High-risk pregnancy care

Hearing you have a high-risk pregnancy may alarm you. However, in most cases, it means that we want to provide you with extra monitoring and care during pregnancy to ensure your and your baby's safety.

Your pregnancy could be deemed high risk because of preexisting conditions such as diabetes or conditions that arise during pregnancy and affect you and/or your baby such as high blood pressure. Regardless of your condition, you can count on our OB/GYNs to provide excellent care.

Labor and delivery services

Our OB/GYNs and midwives partner with LewisGale Hospital Montgomery in Blacksburg and LewisGale Medical Center in Salem, Va. for labor and delivery. When it's time for delivery — or when your water breaks — you'll go to the hospital you and your provider have designated and they will care for you there.

Your provider is supported by the hospital's labor and delivery staff, which includes highly trained nurses and anesthesiologists. The hospitals are also equipped with the amenities and resources you need for a comfortable childbirth experience, from natural pain relief methods to 24-hour epidural access.

Postpartum care

After you give birth to your baby, you will typically remain in the hospital for a day or two, unless we need to monitor you for a longer period of time. This portion of your hospital stay is called postpartum care.

During this time, your provider will check in on you and partner with the hospital's postpartum care staff to ensure a smooth recovery from childbirth. The postpartum care team is also available to care for your baby when you need to rest and help you learn to care for your baby with confidence.

After you are discharged from the hospital, we are still here to support you in any way we can. You and your provider will set a date for your postpartum checkup. However, you do not need to wait until your postpartum appointment if you have questions or concerns.
